Prairie Dev Con, COVID-19, and 2020 Events

Statement from D'Arcy Lussier, Prairie Dev Con Organizer

Hi Everyone.

With the global pandemic still ongoing we feel the safe thing to do is to cancel the three Prairie Dev Con events scheduled for this Fall. I'd like to thank all the attendees, sponsors, and speakers for their interest in Prairie Dev Con this year. Had the pandemic not happened I know we would have had fantastic events in Winnipeg, Regina, and new for this year Calgary!

Note this is just cancelling this year's events. While some conferences have been forced to close permanently, our venues were incredibly open and willing to help reschedule to next year and we have sponsors who have told us they're in as well - so we're already planning for 2021! Of course this is still tentative based on how the next 12 months go, but currently the new Prairie Dev Con 2021 dates are:

  • Regina - October 21-22 (Delta Regina)
  • Calgary - November 3-4 (Best Western Premier Calgary Plaza Hotel & Conference Centre)
  • Winnipeg - November 23-24 (CanadInns Polo Park)

I've included some Q&A below that I think addresses common questions some might have, but if not please don't hesitate to reach out to me via Email at D'Arcy at Prairie Dev Con or on Twitter

Thank you again for your support of Prairie Dev Con, stay safe, and I look forward to seeing you in person in 2021!

D'Arcy Lussier, Prairie Dev Con Organizer

Q&A

I registered for the Calgary event, how do I get a refund?

We'll be sending out an email this week to Calgary attendees with more information.

Are you planning a virtual event this Fall?

As far as a full virtual conference, no. Prairie Dev Con was always meant to be an in-person event and while we could create a virtual conference space we're opting instead to support the many virtual conferences that are happening over Summer and Fall already. We may have a few webinar events in the Fall though. Make sure you're subscribed to our newsletter to get further details.

What were the key factors leading you to cancel?

There were a number of key factors. Many of our speakers come from the US, which continues to have its border with Canada closed and are dealing with higher cases of COVID in many places. Speakers may/may not have to deal with provincial quarantine rules, and many expressed that they were just not comfortable with flying yet. Attendees also expressed concern and that their comfort attending in-person events was very much tied to where things were at with the pandemic. Group size restrictions and social distancing requirements would limit how many people (attendees and speakers) we could have at the events as well. Looking at all this, we decided to pause the events this year and bring them back when we can all come together in person and safely.
